About Quakers

Meeting Room

The Quaker way of life has its roots in Christianity but we differ from most other denominations in that we place the individual’s experience of ‘the light’ at the very centre of our beliefs rather than focussing on outward forms, such as the use of creeds or placing our faith in the inerrancy of biblical authority.

Since we believe that no one has the right to come between the individual Quaker and their sense of the eternal, each of us may have very different beliefs. This is something we find enriching, and we encourage each other to share our experiences so that we all can grow ‘in the things of the spirit’ together.

At the heart of Quakerism is our meeting for worship. Here we gather together in silence and wait in stillness for the transforming power of love and truth. Occasionally, one of us may feel moved to share our insights in ministry with those present.

As we leave the meeting and return to our daily lives we have found our experience of this ‘silently waiting upon God’ to be a source of strength for transforming our own lives and an inspiration for effecting change in society.

Members of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, have worshipped at Bewdley Local Meeting House since 1691, and, before then, in private houses.
